10 Audiobooks for People who Loved The Hunger Games

There was a time in my life that I could curl up with a book and binge read whatever new book that caught my eye. I could lose myself in a plot for hours on end, and feel like I knew the main character of the story so well that she was pretty much my best friend. Then motherhood happened.

Recently when a friend of mine was going on a beach vacation she wanted to know what to read. We got to talking, looking around, researching, and getting ideas form friends and came up with quite a list. Since one of the last books that both she and I read that I really loved was The Hunger Games I have been putting together a list of audiobooks that I think I would like for my “What’s Next” list along with a few others I read along the way based on all of the books we found on our search. These have all come as recommendations to me from other book loving friends and trusted sources that promise these to be riveting, thought provoking and capture your heart good. The Handmaid’s Tale – This book has been acclaimed for decades and has been recorded in a special edition with narration from Claire Danes who receives rave reviews. It is a story of a woman that becomes a handmaid, whose place in society is to be used for reproductive purposes for an extremist ruling class who takes over the United States after a terrorist attack ends the government as we know it. This is a story of bravery and risk as she remembers the life she once had and joins the battle to regain.
Legend– Legend is the story of two teens with parallel but very different lives, one born into privilege and the other of the slums, and how their lives unintentionally but magnetically intertwine as they both look for truth in a war torn world. Like The Hunger Games, this audiobook is full of nonstop action, suspense and thrills.
Graceling– In a world where some are born with a special “super” skill, a grace, Katsa finds hers is killing. Instead of the life of privilege most of those with graces enjoy, she is used by her uncle for her skill. She struggles as she sees how she is being used and with the injustices in the world surrounding hers. This story will draw you in and keep you there until the very end!
Partials– Partials, an engineered being identical to humans, have waged war on humanity and destroyed the majority of the real human race. Like The Hunger Games, this book is a story of survival and asking the questions that aren’t easily answered.
Divergent– This book has so many parallels to The Hunger Games, while carrying it’s own with a strong and unique plot. Both made into popular movies, Divergent is the first in a trilogy set in post war Chicago where people have been separated into 5 factions based on a dominant virtue. Beatrice the heroine, finds herself pulled between two worlds and ends up making a decision that no one sees coming, even surprising herself!
Neuromancer– This book was the basis for the wildly popular movie the Matrix. A classic in it’s own right, if you love to read novels that inspired movies than this one won’t disappoint. This story cyber crime has all of the elements that made you fall in love with The Hunger Games… A love story, an evil villan, and a world beyond your wildest imagination.
The Maze Runner- When teens arrive in the glade, an ever changing giant labyrinth that no one has ever escaped, it is always the same, no memory of the past and no grasp on where they are. Everyone in the glade has one thing in common, they are boys, until one day when a girl appears with a unsettling message. Like The Hunger Games, this story of unlikely escape promises to have you on the edge of your seat and rooting for the underdog.
Gone– In this book all of the adults have vanished leaving only the young behind. As the new reality sets in, lines are drawn, sides are taken and the new world order starts to form as those left behind are figuring out what to make of this new world they live in. This has the same sense of youth, the battle of right, wrong and conscience, and those rising up to do the moral thing agianst the odds as Hunger Games.
The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane– While this book seemingly isn’t much like The Hunger Games, they both have strong female main characters that are forced to make impossible decisions and see their strength of character though until it nearly breaks. This book is the story of a mother and daughter and challenging the norms to find a better life outside the world they know.
Outlander– Though the Hunger Games is set in the future and Outlander is set in the past, this is a book that you will get drawn into the carefully woven plot, fall in love with the love story, and feel torn at the injustice of the love that was left behind.
