Winter Books for School Aged Children

I’m not sure if it’s just my kids but as the weather gets colder I find my kids getting easily bored.  I’ve come up with a list of Winter Books for school aged children to combat the boredom.  These range from easy reads to a little more challenging for the older kids.

I find the more my kids read and less time they spend on electronics they fight so much less.  It’s better for all when everyone is getting along.  I also hope my kids find a love of books because its a great way to transport yourself into another world while reading your book.

Winter Children’s Books

• Owl Moon by Jane Yolen-  This beautiful book depicts a relationship of a father and his daughter.  It also depict the relationship human’s have with nature.
• Blizzard by John Rocco-  Based out of RI this book is a story about the authors experience with a blizzard in 1978.
• Winter Pony by Jean Slaughter Doty-  Giny a little girl has a new pony Money.  Together they explore winter.
• Bramble and Maggie Snow Day by Jessie Haas and Allison Friend-  Bramble the horse is excited for the snow day ahead.  Lucky for his owners he helps the family dig their way out.
• Little Critter: Just a Snowman by Mercer Mayer-  All Little Critter wants to do is play in the snow but he has to help do a lot of other things first.
• The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson-  The Gruffalo’s child wanders into the woods at night for some food but comes across something very interesting out there.
• It’s Snowing! It’s Snowing! by Jack Prelutsky-  This is a fun book full of winter poems.
• Squirrels on Skis by J. Hamilton Ray-  This is a beginners level reading book about crazy squirrels on skis.
• Snowman Paul and the Winter Olympics by Yossi Lapid-  The majority of this book carries great messages for kids.  It also teaches you to follow your dreams and be respectful to others.
• Ice is Nice: All About the North and South Poles by Bonnie Worth-  Follow Cat in the Hat as he talks to all sorts of animals in the the North and South Poles.
• The Magicians Nephew by C.S. Lewis-  Two friends find themselves in a magical land full of evil sorcerers.  Go along with on their journey to find a way out.
• The Shortest Day: Celebrating the  Winter Solstice by Wendy Pfeffer-  This book talks about winter solstice and how it is observed in all different cultures and countries.
• Pete the Cat: Snow Daze by James Dean-  Have fun with Pete the Cat on his snowy adventures.
• Winter Wishes (Shimmer and Shine) by Kristen L. Depken-  Shimmer and Shine mistakingly bring home two ice sprites.  They need to figure out how to bring them back before they turn their home into an ice palace.
• Winter Wonderland #5 (Magic Ponies) by Sue Bentley-  Pretty comes across a magical pony when she is snowed in and can’t leave.
• Winter According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney-  Humphrey is excited to hear from his friends in Room 26 about how they are going to celebrate winter.
• Silver (A Stepping Stone Book) by Gloria Whelan-  Rachel’s dad gave her a little puppy that is the runt of the litter.  She is determined to show everyone he is going to be the best sled dog.
• My Friend Rabbit and The Snow Geese by Eric Rohmann-  Rabbit is going to prove to his friends that snow activities are fun as well.
• The Winter Pony by Lain Lawrence-  A Ponies life changes when he is suddenly captured by men.
• Winter of The Ice Wizard (Magic Tree House) by Mary Pope Osborne-  Jack and Annie journey to help find the magician who has disappeared.  If they don’t find him then he will be gone forever.
• Leprechaun in Late Winter (Magic Tree House) by Mary Pope Osborne-  Jack and Annie go on mission with an Irish girl.
• Unicorn on a Roll ( Phoebe and Her Unicorn Series) by Dana Simpson-  This series is about a girl and her magical  unicorn.

What kind of books are best for School Aged Children

The best kind of books for early to advanced readers are the ones that capture their interest and keep them guessing. I find series books good, because once they finish one book they are excited to start another one.  Most  libraries carry series books and my kids find it fun to go find their favorite books and keep for the month.  If you make reading fun your kids are more likely to want to do it more.  Who knows maybe they will choose it over their electronics someday!!

I find myself getting a little tired of coming up with things to do when my kids are bored.  This list of books can help when the kids complain they have nothing to do or read.  I try to help my kids gain at a young age the love for reading. It’s so nice to sit down with a book and find yourself engulfed in the story.
