Don’t you love it when you find something that just works so well for you that you FINALLY feel like your space is organized in a way that is functional and sustainable?  One of the hardest things about moving around so much like we do is that each place you live has different amounts of space, different options (or lack there of) for storage, and different configurations of how things are laid out.  Sometimes it puts my best Tetris skills to the test when we find that the space isn’t as functional as the one we came from, and bathrooms are the biggest culprit here!

You keep a lot of stuff in the bathroom, but you want almost none of it out in the open so the bathroom can be a really challenging space to organize and more importantly keep organized.  We are about to be on our 10th move of our married life, and so I thought I would share some of the things I have picked up along the way that seem to be a life saver and work in almost any bathroom configuration.  These little hacks make life just a little easier and a little more organized and sometimes that makes all the difference!

5 of My Favorite Bathroom Organization Hacks

1. Under the sink.

Let’s face it… the area under the sink can be an absolutely miserable place to keep tidy.  There are all sorts of cords, creams, lotions, sprays, perfumes, and that is just the beginning.  If you reach in to grab something that doesn’t reside in the first 3 inches of the cabinet, chances are that you will knock over at least 5 things on the way out of the cabinet.  If you need something with a cord that wasn’t used in the last day you will pull out everything with a cord that is in the cabinet.  Then knock over the rest of the stuff getting the tangled mess out.  Trust me, I have been there!

My secret weapon under the sink is so simple, yet totally genius.  All you need is a few sturdy magazine holders and you are in business!  What I love about these are:

1. That they hold quite a bit of under the sink sized stuff in each one.
2. You can keep things easily sorted into categories by putting them in different magazine holders.
3. Everything can be easily seen from the top of the holder.
4. Most importantly, you can pull the holder in and out of the cabinet easily to access items in the front or back with easy and not mess anything else in the cabinet up

You can see in the picture above that you can take a whole cabinet full of different types of items and have almost double the space left when you are done.  It is really amazing!  In this cabinet I have the following organized with the magazine holders (left to right):

1. 2. Hair tools- The way I organize these is to wrap the cord around the curling iron, flat iron, curling want, hair dryer etc.  Then I arrange them standing vertically with the straight items like curling irons and flat irons at the back and I stick the hair dryer in at the front.  It seems to fit in the best like this and since you can easily slide the box to access any tool that you need in it, they tend to stay organized and not get tangled which is a huge win.
3. Bath and body products- The last organizer holds all of the cans, bottles and tubes of stuff in the cabinet.  I can usually fit 2 cans or bottles side by side and can fit between 8-10 items in the organizer.  Again, you can see everything easily, you can pull it out to access whatever you need, and the high sides of the box prevent all of these things from falling over as you are digging in the cabinet for other things.  Huge win!

2. Drawers

Drawers can be tough because they tend to be a catch all for anything that got left on the counter.  There are lots of little things that move, roll and go anywhere and everywhere as the drawer is pulled.  My solution has been to make my own custom organizer using just paper straws and washi tape.  This is great because you can make sections for each of your things and the straws are tall and sturdy enough to keep things from rolling around but not take over your drawer or eat up extra space.

The other thing I love these for is creating channels along the edges of the drawer.  Then I can keep my make up standing up along the side and always easy to find with a spot just for it.  The straws create enough support so that the edge of the make up catches on it to keep it upright and not allow it to slide down.  I love that I can see it all, it is always easy to find and creates a place where it takes up virtually no space in the drawer.

To create this, I usually start by creating the “channels” down the sides of the drawer.  Use your thickest makeup to measure the amount of space you need then use washi tape to secure the straw down.  Washi tape will hold well but isn’t super sticky so you can change your mind, start over, or rearrange things with out any hassle.

Next, use your items you want to be in the drawer to measure the space you need in each section and cut and tape straws to fit and form the section.  Repeat until all sections are complete, then return your items to the drawer.

3.  Bobby Pins

Bobby pins are one of those things that you have a gazillion of but can’t find even one when you need it.  I love to use a magnetic strip inside of the face of the drawer, cabinet or medicine cabinet to keep them all in one place an easily accessible.  This helps me have an easy place to put them when ever I am taking them out of my hair or cleaning up, and when I need to use one they are always there.  This is a little tip, but one of my favorites!

4.  Bath Toys

If you have kids around, then this is a lifesaver. I wanted to pull my hair out each morning after my kids bath. Toys were always left strewn all over the tub and I was scrambling to pick them up as I got ready in the morning.  I tried all sorts of solutions from nets in the corner of the tub to a turtle shaped scoop to scoop them up after the bath.  None of them was bad, but none of them were perfect either!

What has worked better than anything we have tried is just a simple mesh laundry bag!  Again, the simplest thing but works like a charm for the task.  The reason I love this solution is that one main problem with bath toys is that they need to dry before being put up so they don’t get icky.  You can keep the bag handy and have the kids load the wet toys right in it.  Then hang it up on the shower to let them dry.  Once they are dry you can easily move the bag to a tub under the sink and then take the bag out and dump the toys back in the tub the next time you bathe the kids. With the bag the kids can even independently do pretty much that whole process to help free your hands up AND if the toys need a little refreshing you just throw the whole bag in the dishwasher or washing machine and give the toys a bath of their own.

5.  Wastebasket

To have a trash bag or not to have a trash bag.  Of course, on one hand having the bag makes life so much easier and you eliminate the whole having to touch super disgusting, goopy things, in the trash can.  On the other hand, they don’t ever fit right so they end up looking not so great, and then the kids throw in something awkward and knock the whole bag in.  Super frustrating… so why even try it seems?

My last tip is just to secure your trash bag by placing a clip upside down on the back side of the trash can. Then you place the bag in, pull it tight to the back side, twist it, and then secure it with the clip.  I use releasable adhesive clips, but you could use a clothes pin, or even an alligator clip if you can secure it well.
