I have always had this theory that party food should be small. You see the thing is that people don’t like to commit to big things when they are chatting and mingling. But when you have little bites they will graze all day long! Plus as a bonus you can sample lots of different things instead of filling up on one. So with football season starting up and lots of gatherings on the horizon I figured it was time to start thinking of some yummy ways to keep the party fun and filled with delicious food.
I don’t know if there is anything as all American as football and there definitely isn’t anything more American than a big fat cheeseburger so it seemed like a match made in heaven. Except for the fact that hamburgers are everything I think party food shouldn’t be… BIG… messy and time consuming. If you are grilling someone has to man the grill and miss out on all the fun!
The verdict was that the cheeseburger needed a party food makeover so they would be little, easy to eat and perfect for snacking on at the big game. Since a really great cheese burger has quite a few layers which can be hard to keep together in a smaller form factor it seemed perfect (and totally cute) to put them on a skewer!
With a few ingredients you can make plenty of these little guys really quickly and be prepped and ready to entertain. I used hamburger buns, lettuce, tomato, bacon, colby jack cheese, and Butterball Turkey Burgers to put together my bacon cheeseburger skewers. The Butterball Turkey Burgers were perfect for making this because they are lean and wholesome, and so juicy and flavor packed. Also, they keep it quick and simple because they come preformed and ready to cook from your freezer straight to the broiler or grill. I followed the package directions to broil my burger patties in the oven. I like this option because I can do several at once and they go from the freezer to completely cooked in just about 15 minutes. You can also grill them if you prefer!
While they are cooking I cut a hamburger bun in thirds both ways to give me nine mini buns. Then sliced the cheese into small squares and washed the produce.
Once the turkey burgers are cooked, use a round cookie cutter to cut mini burger patties from each large patty. My cutter was about 3/4″ in diameter and I got about 9-10 mini patties out of each burger.
Then cut down some regular bamboo skewers into thirds and assemble your mini burger skewer as follows: bun, lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheese, turkey burger, bun. Since I was serving a crowd, I kept the condiments on the side for dipping so that everyone could have their burger exactly how they like it!
What do I love about these? They are a classic comfort food in a new fun form. Plus by using Butterball Turkey Burgers I was able to keep it lighter but still had every bit as much flavor and deliciousness packed in these little bite sized treats!
