With Halloween right around the corner, you can add this fun surprise to your lamp shades. As the sun goes down and the lights come on these spooky eyes will magically appear!
A couple of weeks ago I posted this fun spooky spider magic lamp trick. My kids loved this little Halloween decoration so much that every night as the sun went down and our lamps came on to reveal the spooky decorations they asked me if they could have some for their room too! And of course who am I to deny them an easy way to decorate for Halloween that is just too much fun. So it was off to find some more fun designs I could use to make this little bit of Halloween magic happen in the kids rooms too.
All you need to make the magic happen is:
- Cut outs of your choice – I used my Silhouette Cameo as detailed below to create my design
- Clear Scotch Tape
- White or Light Colored Lamp Shade
You can get die cuts in a variety of places but I absolutely love using my Silhouette CAMEO to design my own. It is quick, simple, and the perfectionist in me loves that I can customize it down to the tiniest detail to get exactly what I want and how I want it. {Control freak? ….. maybe } Either way, this was super simple since I used this predesigned eyeball set from the Silhouette Store. I resized it a bit to fit my lampshade then ungrouped the file and separated the pieces I wanted out to cut.
Once your pieces are cut weed the design and then place each set of eyes with their pupils on the inside of the lamp shade positioned exactly where you want them. Use a few small pieces of scotch tape to keep each set of eyes securely in place. Then replace the shade on top of the lamp.
It is really just as simple as that! Cut a few die cuts. Place them in your lampshade. Secure with tape. Replace shade. Couldn’t be easier.
I have done spiders and spooky eyes, but the possibilities are really endless. You could do ghosts, or rats, tomb stones, or even a spooky saying for Halloween. Each of them would add the perfect touch to Halloween decor and is extra special since it just shows up as it gets dark outside!

do you think it would work with window clings?

They would need to be thick enough to block the light. You could definitely trace them on to thick paper and cut them out to use.
