Using tacky glue and inexpensive plastic rhinestones, kids can create a sparkling American flag pillow. This project is great for kids ages 5 and up.
We used a pillow in our example but you can use this technique on any fabric surface. Adding a rhinestone design to a tote bag, tee shirt, apron or even a hat is a great fast and easy summer activity for kids.
The supplies are simple:
-Red, White and Blue flat backed rhinestones (the kids also wanted to use star shaped ones so we threw them in as well.)
-Craft Glue (We used craft bond tacky glue (#afflink) since it is designed to hold well on fabric. Since this is a pillow we knew it would get lots of wear and tear and we wanted the bond to be tight.)
-Pillow cover (we made our own out of denim but you can find ready made ones as well.)
-Ruler (optional)
We wanted a new pillow cover for our porch chair and because it was an odd size we decided to make our own. The kids picked out some denim at the craft store, so that is what we used.
We laid out our flag pattern on the table and calculated exactly how large it was. Then, using a ruler we applied a dot of glue for each rhinestone.
Then the girls applied the rhinestones one by one.
Finally, we added a few stars all over the rest of the pillow..just because we could! Even if you include the time it took to sew the pillow cover, the entire project was less than 30 minutes. However, the kids had a BLAST just playing with the ‘gems’ and making patterns on the table before we finally settled down on the final pattern.
And now our front porch has a new patriotic pillow cover!

Oh Kimber, I love this one! I remember making t-shirts with paint and stamps of the 4th of July, but the kids grew out of the t-shirts. I love the pillow idea because you can keep using it year after year. Maybe I will channel my inner crafter and make one of these this year!

Sounds interesting! My nieces will love it. But I’m afraid this pillow is just suitable for decoration, not sleepingcuz it’s quite uncomfortable, you know.
