It’s easy to make your own coasters from scraps of felt and leather or pleather.
Hi, I’m Julie from Sum of their Stories, happy to be here today to show you how I made some inexpensive coasters from scraps of fake leather left over from a coat repair I did some time ago.
To make these you need:
- Scraps of leather or pleather (fake leather)
- Scraps of coloured felt
- Mod Podge
- A decorative punch (mine is a butterfly)
- A lid or coaster to use as a template
- Decent scissors
Draw round your lid or coaster template in pencil on the wrong side of the leather and cut out.
Punch a shape from the leather using the decorative punch. Your punch will determine how far into the coaster the shape can be punched. You can do a pattern with multiple shapes punched if you like, I stuck with just the one.
Cover the wrong side of the leather with a layer of Mod Podge and press firmly to felt.
I left my coaster pressed under a pile of books for an hour or two then removed the books and gave the glue another couple of hours to dry completely.
Once dry, cut the excess felt away and your coaster are ready to use.
Because I used a pleather, I had a little issue with stray threads showing through the butterfly shape when I punched them out. I gave these a little trim from the wrong side with scissors before glueing to the felt. I think if you used real leather, this wouldn’t be a problem.
My coasters use different colours of felt for a rainbow effect but this idea would work with any colour felt and any colour plether or leather. I like the way the felt colour shows as a bottom layer when you look from the side.
If you have alphabet punches or a lovely cutting machine you could make these with initials, or names – nice for a wedding gift perhaps. They would look great monochrome – maybe black with white felt, or very soft naturals colours -cream with a forest green underneath. If your craft supplies are really limited you could just punch small circles with a normal office hole punch and get a really interesting effect. Honestly I think the possibilities are endless! I plan to make some more variations of these really soon.
Thanks for letting me stop by and share this project today Kimber, a pleasure as always!
